Blake Shaffer drove in 2 runs in the win over Adrian

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team defeated number 10 in the nation, Adrian College, in non-conference action 7-6 Thursday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

The Jackets got runs in the first, fifth, and seventh innings to secure a 7-2 lead going into the top of the ninth. Howard Payne gave up 4 runs in that inning but held on to win 7-6.

Royce Rodriquez and Jordan Hammontree had two hits each for the Jackets and Garrett Isom and Blake Shaffer each recorded two RBI.

Billy Ray Cruz was the winning pitcher for Howard Payne. Cruz pitched 6 innings giving up two runs on six hits and striking out five.

Howard Payne improves to 6-8 overall while Adrian falls to 1-3 on the year.

The Jackets will open up conference play this weekend with a three-game series versus Schreiner University at Don Shepard Park.
