Jackets Drop First Conference Game

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets struggled at the plate and dropped game one of the three-game series against Schreiner University 2-9 at Don Shepard Park Friday afternoon.

Two Howard Payne errors allowed Schreiner to jump ahead early in the first with 4 runs. The Jackets had a three up three down top of the second but still weren't able to get on the board in the bottom of the inning. After Schreiner added 2 more in the third the Jackets scored one off of a double by Taylor Zambreski.

It was a scoreless fourth on both ends. Shreiner then pounded out 5 singles scoring 2 in the fifth. Howard Payne scored their second and final run in the bottom of the sixth when Cale Thompson crossed the plate on a shot to left by Dustin Climer. The Jackets could not string together enough hits and fell 2-9. HPU was short on hits with 7 to Schreiner's 15.

Climer had a good day at the plate for the Jackets going 2-4 with 1 RBI. Blake Shaffer was 1-2. Schreiner's Richard Sanchez went 4-4 with 3 RBI. Will Hood took the loss for the Jackets and Roger Ayala secured the win for Schreiner.

Howard Payne falls to 6-9 overall and 0-1 in ASC play while Schreiner improves to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in ASC play.

The Jackets will finish up their conference series against Schreiner tomorrow at 12:00 and 3:00.
