Shaffer's Double Gives HPU The Win

Blake Shaffer drove in 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth to win

BROWNWOOD, Texas - After leading early, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets came from behind to defeated the visiting Concordia University Nebraska Bulldogs 14-13 with an RBI by Blake Shaffer in the bottom of the ninth at Don Shepard Park Monday afternoon.

At the end of the 2nd, Howard Payne led 7-2. The Jackets committed seven errors in the game which gave Concordia-Nebraska the lead. The errors caught up with the Jackets and Concordia-Nebraska posted 10 runs over the next five innings. 

After the Bulldogs added another run in the top of the 8th to lead 13-8, the Jackets bats caught on fire again. Howard Payne posted a 4-run bottom of the 8th with homeruns by Kyle Lloyd and Blake Shaffer. 

Going into the bottom of the ninth the Jackets were down 12-13. Lloyd flied out to left field. Jordan Hammontree was hit by pitch. Taylor Zambreski then reached on catcher's interference to have runners at first and second. Blake Shaffer finished the game off with a doubled to left center scoring Zambreski and Hammontree for the 14-13 victory.

Shaffer had 3 hits and 5 RBI in the game. Garrett Ison had 3 hits and Ryan Breeding also had 2 RBI.

Mark Cumpian picked up the win for Howard Payne and Steven Ivanoff got the loss for the Bulldogs.

The Jackets improve to 8-10 overall and Concordia Nebraska falls to 3-9 on the year.

Howard Payne will play next on Wednesday at 3:00 pm at home vesus Wabash College.
