HPU Drops Two To UMHB

BELTON, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball team was swept in double header American Southwest Conference action Sunday afternoon by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 7-1 and 15-5.

Howard Payne falls to 13-22 overall and 6-14 in the ASC with the two losses. UMHB improves to 21-15 overall and 11-9 in ASC play with the two victories.

UMHB scored three in the third inning and added two more in the fourth to won game one 1-7. UMHB did have one run in the bottom of the first UMHB pushed it to 4-0 with three runs in the third. UMHB pushed it to 6-0 with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. The Yellow Jackets scored on a RBI groundout cutting it to 6-1 in the top of the fifth. UMHB scored an additional run in the bottom of the inning to bring it to the 7-1 UMHB final score.

Dustin Climer took the loss for HPU to drop to 1-7. Royce Rodriguez had three of the Yellow Jackets' eight hits in the game.

UMHB used an eight-run fifth inning to break open a close game on the way to a 15-5 game two victory. UMHB took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. UMHB added a RBI double in the second to make it 5-0 UMHB. HPU's Blake Shaffer ripped a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to cut it to 5-2 before UMHB posted eight runs in the fifth. HPU added a run on an error in the top of the seventh. UMHB added insurance runs on RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth and HPU scored a pair in the top of the ninth for the final runs of the game.

Will Hood took the loss for HPU to drop to 2-4 on the season. Shaffer had three of HPU's 10 hits in the game.

The two teams will close out the series on Monday with a single game at 2:00 pm.
