Jackets End With Loss To UMHB

BELTON, Texas – The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets ended their season with a 10-17 loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at Red Murff Field Monday afternoon.

The loss ends Howard Payne's season at 13-23 overall and 6-15 in the ASC action. UMHB improves to 22-15 overall and 12-9 in ASC play with the victory.

UMHB scored on a wild pitch to lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Howard Payne answered with two runs in the top of the second on Ryan Breeding's RBI double and an RBI single from Nick Loving. HPU stretched it to 3-1 in the top of the third inning before UMHB answered with three runs in the bottom of the third.

HPU would grab an 8-4 lead with a five-run fourth inning. Kyle Lloyd's two-run single was the biggest hit of the inning as the Yellow Jackets took advantage of three hits, two walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch in the frame. UMHB closed to 8-7 with three in the bottom of the fourth. A UMHB sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at eight and they took the lead with a four-run sixth inning. UMHB would get five more in the seventh to make it 17-8. Blake Shaffer would double home a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but that's as close as the Yellow Jackets would get.

Jimmy May took the loss for HPU to drop to 1-5 on the year. Lloyd, Jordan Hammontree and Garrett Isom had two hits apiece for Howard Payne. Shaffer drove in three runs.
