HPU Stings McMurry In Straight Sets

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jacket volleyball team defeated McMurry University in straight sets 3-0 Tuesday night in their first home game of the 2009 season.

The win against McMurry was HPU's first win against them since 2006.

After winning the first set 25-22, Howard Payne fell behind early in the second set to McMurry 6-13. They came back on a 12-3 run to take the score to 18-16. The run catapulted them to a 25-21 win in the second.

That momentum carried over and the Jackets started the third set 6-1. McMurry never was able to recover and the Lady Jackets took the third and final set 25-21 to win the match.

Amanda Gutierrez led the HPU with 10 kills and a block. Right behind Amanda was Tamika Heline with 9 kills.

Sydney Bryant had an all around night with 8 kills and 8 digs. Amy Cardwell with 18 assists. Along side was Amber Cantu-Curry with 3 kills, 9 assists and 2 digs.

Terah Brown led McMurry with 8 kills while setters Carmyn Wingrove and Kelsey Campbell wound up with 14 and 8 assists.

The win moves HPU's record to 3-7 on the season and 1-1 in the American Southwest Conference. McMurry falls to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in ASC play.

Howard Payne will next play Hardin-Simmons in Abilene this coming Saturday, Sept 19.
