Jackets Take Late Lead But Fall

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne University linebacker Demetrius Cody returned a fumble 75 yards for a TD giving the Jackets a 15-14 lead with 1:17 left only to have Southwestern Assemblies of God University drive 63 yards and score to take the game 15-21.

Both teams struggled in the first half to score. HPU had the best opportunities with great field position but only came away with a Mitchell Bailey 29 yard field goal 8:49 left in the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets had two field goal attempts blocked in the game.

SAGU did get on the scoreboard first when Patrick Smith intercepted a Thomas Head pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown with 2:38 left in the first quarter. 7-3 SAGU at the half.

The Jackets found themselves down 14-3 when SAGU scored on a 5 yard run to start the fourth quarter.

HPU's Marcus McAdoo found Karl Stewart in the endzone on a 31 yard TD pass with 3:41 left in the game. The Jackets' two-point conversion failed and SAGU led 14-9.

On the next drive, HPU linebacker Demetrius Cody returned a SAGU fumble 75 yards for a TD giving the Jackets a 15-14 lead with 1:17 left only to have SAGU drive 63 yards and score to take the game 21-15.

Demetrius Cody had 12 tackles (2.5 for loss) to go along with his fumble recovery and TD. HPU QB Marcus McAdoo was 6 of 10 passing for 119 yards and a TD.

The Jackets are now 0-2 on the season while Southwestern Assemblies improves to 1-1 overall. Howard Payne will open up conference play at home next week versus Sul Ross State University.
