Jackets Drop DH To Concordia

AUSTIN, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team fell 8-5 and 6-5 in a conference double header with #18 Concordia University Texas Sunday evening to open ASC West Division action.

The Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one when Colton Buzzard tripled to right center and then was brought home on a Dustin Cole infield single. HPU added a run in the fourth on a Sam Dollahite RBI single but Concordia's six-run bottom of the third was what secured the 8-2 game one win for CTX.

Gilbert Barrera got the loss in game one for the Jackets throwing 2.2 innnings. Reed Klose finished out the game on the mound for HPU. Jordan Hammontree, Carlton Brown, Dustin Cole and Colton Buzzard each had two hits for the Jackets. Howard Payne out hit Concordia 11-6 in the game.

The Jackets held a 2-1 lead after two in game two. Howard Payne would score three runs in the top of the fifth only to have Concordia score three in the bottom of the same inning to tie the game at 5-5. It remained tied till the bottom of the ninth when Concordia would score on a walk-off RBI single to center field.

Carlton Brown got the loss for HPU throwing 3.2 innings in relief. Brown allowed just one run on three hits and struck out six. Corey Howie, who got the start, threw 4.2 innings giving up five runs on seven hits and struck-out four. Conner Roberts had two hits for the Jackets.

Howard Payne now stands at 5-10 overall and 0-2 in conference play.  #18 Concordia is now 16-4 overall and 2-0 in conference. The two teams will play a single game on Monday in Austin to complete the three game series.
