Jackets Split With UMHB

BELTON, Texas – Both Howard Payne University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor used huge offensive innings to secure wins this Saturday in a conference double header. HPU won game one 10-8 after a 10-run sixth and UMHB won game two 15-3 after an 11-run first inning.

Howard Payne moves to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in the American Southwest Conference West action. UMHB is now 11-10 overall and 2-4 in ASC West Division play following the split.

UMHB jumped out to an 8-0 lead only to see it disappear in Howard Payne's 10-run sixth inning in a 10-8 game one. UMHB scored two runs on an error to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third and pushed it to 4-0 on a two-run homer in the fourth. A two-run double highlighted a four-run fifth to give the UMHB an 8-0 lead.

Carlton Brown got the Jackets started in the sixth with a two-run homer to open the scoring, four bases loaded walks and an RBI single cut the lead to 8-7. Colton Buzzard would give HPU the lead with a two-run single. Jake Sadler added an RBI single for an insurance run in the 10-8 Jacket win.

UMHB exploded for 11 runs in bottom of the first of game two and then cruised to a 15-3 win in a game shortened by the run rule. HPU answered with a run in the second. The Yellow Jackets then scored a pair of runs in the third to close the gap to 12-3, but UMHB pushed across three more in the bottom of the sixth for the 15-3 final.

Howard Payne will play this Tuesday at home in a non-conference double header with Southwestern Assemblies of God University at Don Shepard Park starting at 1:00 pm.
