Baseball Completes Sweep Of Sul Ross State

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team defeated Sul Ross State University in both games of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Don Shepard Park. Howard Payne won the first game 11-10 and the second game 8-3.

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets would strike first and take a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Sul Ross answered in the top of the second inning to tie the game 1-1. The Jackets then took back the lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to move infront 4-1.

Later in the fourth inning, Sul Ross would take the lead after scoring four runs to go ahead 5-4. In the bottom of the inning, HPU scored a run to tie the game 5-5. The Yellow Jackets would then score six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take back the lead 11-5. Sul Ross would attempt to rally in the seventh inning. Sul Ross scored five straight runs but the game would then end after Howard Payne turned a double-play.

With starter Gilbert Barrera departing after three innings of work, Carlton Brown would receive the win giving up four runs on seven hits. Ben Butler recorded the save. Colton Buzzard was 3 of 4 from the plate and Houston Holmes and Dustin Cole added two hits each.

In game two, Sul Ross got on the board first scoring a run in the top of the first inning. The Yellow Jackets then tied the game 1-1 after scoring a run in the bottom of the third inning.

The Lobos would take back the lead in the top of the fifth inning going ahead 2-1. Howard Payne then answered in the bottom of the inning scoring a run to tie the game 2-2.

After scoring a single run in the bottom of the sixth, the Yellow Jackets then opened up the game scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to improve their lead to 8-2. Sul Ross would score a run in top of the ninth inning to cut the margin to 8-3. Howard Payne would then get the final out ending the game ahead 8-3.

Jonathan Morris got the complete game win for HPU giving up three runs on seven hits. Morris struckout three and walked four.

Howard Payne is now 14-20 overall and 7-11 in ASC West Division play. Sul Ross State stands at 7-29 overall and 3-15 in conference. The Yellow Jackets will play in Irving, Texas versus the University of Dallas in a non-conference double header on Tuesday before finishing the regular season with a weekend conference series with Hardin-Simmons in Abilene.
