Jackets Drop DH To TLU

BROWNWOOD, Texas – A Howard Payne University extra inning comeback attempt came up short and the Yellow Jackets dropped a double header to Texas Lutheran University 5-0 and 6-5 in baseball action Friday at Don Shepard Park.

Howard Payne is now 11-20 overall and 4-11 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. Texas Lutheran stands at 21-9 overall and 12-3 in ASC West Division action.

The Yellow Jackets dropped game one 5-0 recording just three hits. Gilbert Barrera got the loss for HPU throwing 5.1 innings. He gave up three runs on seven hits and striking out four. Ben Butler saw action on the mound in relief.

HPU came back twice from two-run deficits in game two. TLU led 3-1 and Howard Payne tied in a 3-3 after six and at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. TLU added a run in the tenth on an RBI triple. Jordan Hammontree singled to start the bottom of the inning but two HPU strikeouts and a pop fly would end the Jackets comeback attempt.

Colton Brown recorded the loss in relief throwing 1.0 inning. Starter Corey Howie threw 9.0 innings giving up five runs on five hits.

Howard Payne will have a home conference series with Sul Ross State next weekend. Friday's single will start at 2:00 pm and the Saturday double header will begin at 1:00 pm.
