Jackets Take Two From Dallas Christian College

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team fell behind early in both games but went on to claim double header wins 6-5 and 4-2 over Dallas Christian College Tuesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

In game one of the double header, both teams posted four runs in the first inning. Dallas Christian added another run in the top of the second to gain a 5-4 lead.

The score remained 6-5 DCC until the bottom of the fifth when the Jackets scored two runs to take the lead 6-5. It was a Jake Sadler single to center field scoring Houston Holmes and Sam Dollahite that gave the Jackets the lead and eventually the game 6-5.

Dustin Kelver recorded the win for HPU in relief throwing 1.1 innings giving up just one hit and walking one. Carlton Brown got the save throwing 1.2 innings striking out two and walking one.

Dollahite was 3 of 4 from the plate and Holmes and Sadler each added two hits.

Game two also saw the Jackets falling behind early after a one run top of the second by Dallas Christian.

It was three-run the bottom of the fifth that would give the Jackets the lead for good. Ryan Klose doubled down the right field line to score Sadler. Then Joshua Martinez singled scoring Quinton Poe who had pitch ran for Klose. Dollahite would single through the left side to score Martinez to round out the inning.

Starter Jonathan Morris got the win for the Jackets going six full innings giving up two runs on four hits and striking out three. Ben Butler got the save for HPU throwing the final inning. Sadler finished with two hits for the Jackets.

Howard Payne is now 6-1 overall and Dallas Christian College falls to 0-2 overall. The Jackets will play in the Concordia Texas Rudy's Country Store & BBQ Tornado Classic this weekend in Austin, Texas.
