Jackets Winless At CTX Tourney

AUSTIN, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team dropped all three weekend games at the Concordia University Texas Tournament.

On Friday, the Jackets fell a 3-2 in a 12th inning decision to the University of the Ozarks.

In the fourth, Alan Sailors singled to score Ben Butler scored, but the Ozarks answered back in the bottom of the inning.

Sam Dollahite would score on a passed ball in the ninth to take a 2-1 lead. Ozarks tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field to send the game to extra innings. Neither team scored till the 12th when Ozarks won on a RBI single.

HPU starter Corey Howie threw seven innings giving up one run on two hits and striking out four. Hayden Ballard saw one inning of work before Reed Klose came in for the final three innings and recorded the loss.

In game one on Saturday, the Jackets would commit three errors and give up five Concordia runs in the top of top of the fifth eventually falling 7-0.

Starter Jonathan Morris recorded the loss for the Jackets throwing four innings of work giving up five runs on three hits and striking out four. Dustin Kelver, Mitchell Marquis, Dalton Tisdale and Tyler Gaddis all saw time in relief for the Jackets.

In the late game, UTDallas opened the game with four unanswered runs before Howard Payne drew within a run with a three-run fifth frame. UTD answered with a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and a solo home run in the eight to secure the win.

Gilbert Barrera got the loss for HPU throwing six innings, giving up five runs on two hits due to six walks. Barrera also struckout seven. Ethan Ferrel, Carlton Brown and Quinton Poe saw time in relief for HPU.

Howard Payne is now 6-4 overall and will play next on Tuesday at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin.
