Jackets Drop DH To Mississippi College

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team lost both games of the doubleheader against Mississippi College Saturday afternoon. The Jackets lost 1-9 in the first game and 2-15 in the second game.

In the first game, Mississippi College would lead 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. HPU would get on the board in the bottom of inning when Sam Dollahite singled to left field to score Sailors and cut the margin to 6-1.

The Choctaws would score a run in the sixth inning and then two runs in seventh to end the game 9-1.

Gilbert Barrera got the loss and fell to 2-2 on the season. He allowed six runs off six hits while walking four batters and recording two strikeouts in five complete innings.

In the second game, MC led 12-0 heading into the sixth inning. The Jackets would score in the bottom of the inning when Jake Sadler singled to score Ben Butler.

The Choctaws then scored three runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 15-1. HPU would score once more in the bottom of the inning when Dollahite singled and then was thrown out in a rundown allowing Colton Buzzard to score.

Jonathan Morris received the loss and fell to 1-2 on the season. He allowed five runs off two hits while walking two batters and recording one strikeout in 1/3 of an inning. The Jackets used six total pitchers in the game.

Howard Payne is 9-6 on the season and will travel to Tucson, AZ to play Benedictine University on February 28th at Tucson Invitational.  They will be in Tuscon from Feb. 22-March 3.
