Jackets Defeat Benedictine-Springfield In Final At Bat

TUSCON, AZ - The Howard Payne men's baseball team would score two runs in the final frame to defeat Benedictine University at Springfield 6-5 in the Tuscon Invitational late Thursday evening.

The score was 3-2 Benedictine after two when HPU's Sam Dollahite singled home Jake Sadler and Alan Sailors in the bottom of the inning.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the fourth on a Carlton Brown double down the left line to score Houston Holmes and Colton Buzzard. 4-3 Jackets

Benedictine took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth, but the Jackets rallied in the bottom of the nineth started off by Brown with a single to left field. Benedictine walked the next four batters to give Howard Payne the 6-5 victory.

Carlton Brown got the win in relief for the Yellow Jackets throwing just the final frame. Starter Corey Howie threw six full innings giving up three runs on three hits and striking out two. Ben Butler also saw two innings of work in relief.

Howard Payne is now 10-6 overall and will play Simpson College on Saturday  at 7:00 pm in the Tuscon Invitational.
