BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team splits a double header on day two with Jarvis Christian College 11-5 and 5-8 to take the weekend series 2-1 at Don Shepard Park.

It was a three-run homerun in the third inning by Ben Butler that sparked the Jackets 11-run output in game one of the Saturday double header.

The Jackets also scored three runs in the fifth and added a five run sixth to complete their 11-5 win.

Gilbert Barrera recorded the win allowing one run on three hits and striking out six. Carlton Brown, Ben Butler, John Elmore and Preston Carpenter each had two hits.

In game two, it was a 6-5 game going into the ninth but the Jackets would allow two Jarvis Christian runs to trail 8-5 going to the bottom of the inning.

The Jackets had two runners on in their final at bat but could not bring them home picking up their first loss on the year 8-5.

Corey Howie got the loss for HPU throwing eight full innings striking out six and allowing six runs on nine hits. Houston Holmes had three hits and Carlton Brown had three RBIs on two hits.

Howard Payne is now 4-1 overall and will play next on Tuesday at home versus Dallas Christian College. The double header will begin at 1:00 pm at Don Shepard Park.
