Jackets Drop DH To UMHB

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball recorded double header loses to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-1 and 8-3 Saturday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Six Yellow Jacket fielding errors led to an 8-1 loss in game one of the double header. Howard Payne recorded just three hits in the game and scored their only run in the sixth. With runners on second and third, Colton Buzzard reached on an error by the UMHB first baseman allowing Carlton Brown to score from third.

Kyle Kulczyk was 2-for-3 from the plate. Ben Butler got the loss for HPU throwing five innings and giving up seven runs on nine hits.

In game two, the Jackets stranded 17 runners on base and recorded just six hits in the 8-3 loss. HPU would get all of their offensive output in the fourth scoring three.

Brown would walk with the bases loaded to bring home one run. Then Kulczyk singled to right field to bring home Jake Sadler and Sam Dollahite.

Cody Cain was 3-for-4 from the plate to lead the Jackets. Gilbert Barrera threw 4.0 innings in the start recording the loss. Barrera gave up six runs, only one earned, and struckout four.

Howard Payne is now 14-12 overall and 1-5 in conference. UMHB stands at 9-11 overall and 2-4 in conference. The Jackets will play next in Kerrville, Texas on March 22-23 in a conference weekend series with Schreiner University.
