Jackets Gain DH Sweep Of Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team exploded for 26 hits in a double header sweep of Schreiner University 4-3 and 12-3 Saturday afternoon in conference action.

In the normally scheduled seven inning game one, the Jackets needed extra innings to gain the 4-3 victory in the 9th.

Howard Payne took a 2-1 lead in game one after scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A Cody Cain single scored Connor Roberts in the fourth and Carlton Brown doubled to bring home Sam Dollahite in the fifth.

Schreiner would tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth. The game eventually when to extra innings with the Jackets scoring two runs in the ninth to take the win.

Carlton Brown was 3-for-5 from the plate in the game to lead the Jackets. Ryan Klose and Colton Buzzard each added two hits. Ben Butler got the no decision in the start throwing five innings giving up just one run on five hits, striking out three. Carlton Brown got the win in relief giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out three.

In game two, Howard Payne scored single runs in the first two frames and then unloaded for five in the top of the 4th. A Dillon McDugle two-run homer would bring home the first two runs, later Joshua Martinez singled to score Dusty Taylor. Carlton Brown would round out the fourth inning scoring by driving home Martinez and Colton Buzzard with a double.

The Jackets added three more runs in the next inning to gain a 10-3 lead after five innings. They would add two more in the seventh to complete the 12-3 win.

McDugle and Martinez both were 3-for-4 from the plate and each drove in two runs. Gilbert Barrera recorded the win throwing five innings allowing just five hits and striking out three. Jonathan Morris threw solid in relief fanning two and giving up no hits in two innings of work.

Howard Payne improves to 16-13 overall and 3-6 in conference. Schreiner falls to 8-20 overall and 1-5 in the ASC. The Jackets will play next on Tuesday at home in a non-conference double header with Austin College starting at 1:00 pm.
