Jackets Drop Two At Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball team dropped a doubleheader 3-2 and 12-2 to Sul Ross State University Sunday afternoon at Kokernot Field.

After the first game was suspended on Saturday due to lightning and rain, play resumed in the top of the seventh inning with both teams tied at 2-2 with one out.

From that point, Jake Sadler would reach on an error by the third baseman. Then the Yellow Jackets struck out swinging and grounded to third to end the top of the seventh.

A Sul Ross double, an error by HPU pitcher Carlton Brown and a single to score a run would secure the game for Sul Ross 3-2 in the bottom of the inning.

After the Ben Butler start going five innings, Carlton Brown (5-1) recorded his first loss of the year in relief. Butler gave up two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking three. Joshua Martines and Brown were both 2-for-3 from the plate.

Game two saw Sul Ross scoring 12 runs in the first three innings. Starter Gilbert Barrera would only go one-third of an inning and Jonathan Morris only lasted 1.2 in relief. Reed Klose came and stopped the bleeding going the final four frames in the 12-2 final. Klose finished with five strike outs.

The Jackets got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Martinez singled up the middle to score Alan Sailors and Butler.

Howard Payne is now 20-18 overall and 5-10 in conference. Sul Ross is 13-20 overall and 5-10 in conference. The Jackets will play their final home series of the year this next weekend versus Hardin-Simmons. The Friday single will begin at 2:00 pm and the Saturday doubleheader starts at 1:00 pm.
