BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team finished out the 2013 season taking the conference series with Hardin-Simmons University 2-1 with a 4-1 victory in game two of their double header. The Yellow Jackets fell in game one 5-0.

The Jackets finish the season at 21-19 overall and 7-11 in conference play, just one game out of the fourth ASC playoff spot. The series win was the first for the Yellow Jackets over Hardin-Simmons since 2003.

In game one, Hardin-Simmons scored one in the third and four in the fourth while holding the Jackets to just three hits to win 5-0.

Carlton Brown recorded the loss in the start giving up five runs on five hits and striking out three in four innings. Ben Butler did throw solid in relief striking out six in three innings of action. Sam Dollahite finished 2-for-3 from the plate.

The Jackets jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three innings in game two. A Carlton Brown double to left center would score Dolahite. Then a Houston Holmes single through the right side scored Brown. The third inning scoring was finished off by a Ben Butler sacrifice fly to score Ryan Klose.

Howard Payne added an insurance run in the fourth on a Ryan Klose sacrifice fly to center to score Colton Buzzard.

HPU used four pitchers in the victory with Gilbert Barrera recording the win in the start. Barrera gave up one run on just two hits and struckout five. Seniors Reed Klose, Tyler Gaddis and Jonathan Morris all saw time relief with Morris receiving credit for the save.
