RICHARDSON, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets erased a double digit UT-Dallas second half lead to forced overtime but fell the second OT 81-79 on a buzzer beater Monday afternoon in conference action.
The Lady Jackets would jump out to an early lead in the game sparked by great play from
Kalin Hanna. A
Sarah Van Remmen jumper gave HPU a 15-6 lead six minutes into the game.
UT-Dallas would outscore HPU 21-7 the rest of the half to gain a 27-22 halftime lead.
UTD built a 59-42 lead with 4:32 remaining. From that point, HPU went on a 15-1 to pull within three, 60-57 with 15 seconds remaining on a jumper by
Danyel Bradley. After a HPU defensive stop. Bradley hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to tie the game and send it overtime.
With both in double bonus shooting UTD hit four free throws to gain a 64-60 lead a minute into overtime. Four free-throws down the stretch by Bradley forced a second overtime.
A three point play by
Jessica Galaviz gave HPU a 79-76 lead with a 1:01 left in the second overtime. UTD would hit a three-pointer on their next possession and hold HPU to get a chance to win the game with 27 seconds remaining. After a missed three point bucket by UTD with four second left, HPU tied up the the rebound with the possession arrow favoring UTD.
UTD ran an inbounds play and got a layup by Micaela Gonzalez at the buzzer to defeat the Lady Jackets 81-79 in the second overtime.
Danyel Bradley led all scorers with 35 points.
Kalin Hanna had her best game ever as a Lady Jacket with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks.
Sarah Van Remmen added 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Jessica Galaviz finished with eight rebounds and a game high six assists.
The Lady Jackets outrebounded the Comets 51-46. Neither team took care of the ball well with UTD committing 20 turnovers and HPU with 25.
UTD was led by Madi Hess with 18 points followed by Ashley Shaw with 14 points. Iemah Wallace Perry had 11 and Nicolette finished with 10 points.
Howard Payne stands at 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. UT-Dallas is 8-1 overall and 5-1 in ASC action. The Lady Jackets will have the holiday break next and will play again on January 3
rd at the University of Texas at Tyler.
