Jackets Comeback Falls Short In Series Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team dropped a conference double header 3-17 and 6-8 to Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

The Yellow Jackets led 2-1 after the first inning of game one when a Matthew Daniel single through the right side scored Joshua Martinez and Colton Brown.

After a Mary Hardin-Baylor two-run fourth, the Jackets tied the game up at 3-3 on a Dustin DeJohn single to right center scoring Kyle Kulczyk.

It was a 14-run sixth inning by UMHB that put the game out of reach for the Jackets.

Jacob Spivey got the no decision for HPU in the start, Spivey went 4.2 innings giving up three runs on two hits and striking out five. Garrett Virgin got the loss in relief. Matthew Daniel was 2-for-2 from the plate with two RBIs for the Jackets.

In game two, the Jackets again would lead 2-1 after the first inning. A Dustin DeJohn infield single would score Will Roberts, then Kyle Kulczyk would score on a passed ball.

Mary Hardin-Baylor would take a 6-2 lead scoring two runs in the third and fourth and one in the fifth.

The Jackets battled back to tie up the game 6-6 scoring two runs in the seventh and eighth frames. A Will Robert two-run homer would bring HPU within two in the seventh. In the eighth, a Jake Sadler grounder to second scored John Elmore then later a Joshua Martinez single down the right field line brought home Cody Cain.

Two Mary Hardin-Baylor RBI singles in the ninth would bring the game to its final 8-6 score.

Matthew Parks got the loss in the start for HPU throwing 7.2 innings on the mound and giving up six runs on nine hits and striking out four. Jamie Boyd saw time in relief for the Jackets. Kyle Kulczyk and Will Robert each would go 2-for-4 from the plate in the game.

Howard Payne stands at 3-4 overall and UMHB is now 4-0 on the year. The Yellow Jackets will play next on the road versus the University of the Ozarks Feb. 28-Mar. 1 in Clarksville, Ark.
