Jackets Drop Series Opener To HSU

Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team fell behind early to Hardin-Simmons and would drop the series opener 17-10 Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Leading 2-1 after three innings, Hardin-Simmon would score three in the fourth and five in the sixth to lead 10-2.

Hardin-Simmons added three more in the seventh but the Jacket would answer scoring three in the bottom of the inning and five in the bottom of the eigth to pull within four 14-10. HSU scored three runs in the top of the nineth to secure the 17-10 win.

A Cody Cain single to right center would bring home Dustin DeJohn in the third inning for the Jackets first score of the game. Matthew Daniel singled to center field in the fifth to score Cain for HPU's second run of the game. 

A Colton Brown RBI triple got the scoring started for HPU in the seventh. Brown would later score on a HSU wild pitch and a Daniel double brought home Joshua Martinez to round out the Jackets three-run seventh.

John Elmore singled home Jake Sadler and Will Roberts to start off the five run eighth for Howard Payne. Colton Brown then hit a three-run homer to left filed to pull the Jackets to within four, 14-10.

Corey Howie got the loss for HPU throwing six full innings giving up 10 run on 13 hits and striking out five. The Jackets used seven other pitchers in relief.

Brown, Daniel and Elmore each had two hits for HPU. Brown finished with four runs batted in. 

Howard Payne is now 6-8 overall and Hardin-Simmons stands at 5-8 overall. Both team team will play a double header tomorrow starting at 1:00 pm.
