Jackets Take Series Opener With MC 6-3

Box Score CLINTON, Miss. – The Howard Payne baseball team scored four runs with two outs in the first inning and held on for a 6-3 victory over the Mississippi College Thursday night at Frierson Field.

The first two Yellow Jackets were retired to open the game, but a walk and five straight hits, including a two-run double from John Elmore put HPU ahead 4-0 after the first half inning.

Mississippi College got on the board in the second inning with two singles and a wild pitch.

In the seventh inning, the Choctaws would cut the lead to 4-2 with a sacrifice fly to score a running who led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. MC was able to get a runner to third in the inning, but Howard Payne starter Corey Howie got out of the jam with a strikeout.

Howie threw 145 pitches over 8.2 innings pitched. He scattered seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Ethan Ferrel came out of the bullpen to get the final out of the game and earn his first save of the season.

The Jackets were able to push the lead out to 6-2 with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. MC put together a rally in the ninth with two outs, scoring on a double followed with a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. After the runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch, Ferrel was able to get a ground out and save the game.

Jake Sadler led the HPU offense with three hits and two RBI, while Dustin DeJohn and Connor Roberts drove in two runs apiece.

Howard Payne is now 15-15 overall and 12-13 ASC play. MC stands at 15-15 overall and 13-12 in conference. The two teams will be back in action on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
