Jackets Exit Tournament With 2-1 Loss To UTD

Dustin DeJohn was 2-for-3 from the plate vs UT-Dallas

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team tied the game in the top of the ninth only to lose 2-1 in the bottom of the inning to the University of Texas at Dallas on day three of the American Southwest Conference baseball tournament Friday afternoon.

With two out in the ninth, Howard Payne would tie the game at 1-1 on a Jake Sadler RBI double to right field to score CJ Schumann. Schumann pinch ran for Kyle Kulczyk who had singled earlier in the inning.

The Jackets would then have running at first and third after a Conner Roberts pinch hit walk. Cody Cain popped out to the shortstop to end the chance at taking the lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the UT-Dallas lead-off batter reach on a fielding error by the shortstop. A walk and field choice on a bunt then loaded the bases for the Comets. finally a sacrifice fly to right field scored the third base running to win the game 2-1 for the Comets.

UT-Dallas gained their first run in the second on an error by the second baseman to lead 1-0. The Comets would hold that lead till the ninth when the Jackets tied the game.

Jacob Spivey got the no decision in the start going 7.1 innings, giving up just one unearned run on six hits. Ethan Ferrel recorded the loss in relief throwing one full inning.

Dustin DeJohn was 2-for-3 from the plate and Jake Sadler had the only RBI for Howard Payne.

Howard Payne finishes their season at 20-23 overall and with their first appearance in the ASC tournament since 2002. The Jackets are now 5-6 all-time in the ASC tournament.
