JACKSON, Mississippi - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team fell 63-62 to non-conference opponent Millsaps College Friday afternoon at the Hanger Dome.
Howard Payne forced 26 Millsaps turnovers but was outrebounded by the Majors 52-32. The Lady Jackets would take care of the basketball committing a season low six turnovers in the game.
Leading 62-61 with just under a minute to play, Howard Payne missed on its shot attempt and fouled with 21 seconds remaining to give Millsaps an opportunity to take the lead. Millsaps' Braxton Thomas hit both free-throws to give them a 63-62 lead.
After a Lady Jacket timeout, the shot attempt by
Sarahi Castillo with seven second remaining was blocked. Millsaps recovered the ball to secure the game.
Poor shooting from the field was a major factor for Howard Payne as the Lady Jackets connected on just 29.2% of their shots from the field, 23.1% from behind the arc. Millsaps would shoot 45.1% from the field in the game.
Danyel Bradley led all scorers with 23 points, four steals and three assists.
Sarahi Castillo followed with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Millsaps was led by Kala-Jewel Freeman with 19 points and nine rebounds. Miah Brooks had 13 points and Braxton Thomas added 10 points.
Howard Payne is now 3-6 overall and Millsaps stands a 5-3 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play at D-I Lamar University after the Christmas break on December 30th at 7:00 pm.
