BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team defeated the Sul Ross State 10-7 and 10-3 and claimed an American Southwest Conference tournament spot in the process Saturday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

The 10-7 and 10-3 double header wins secured the weekend series sweep for Howard Payne over Sul Ross State after the Yellow Jackets 5-2 victory on Friday. HPU also secured the final spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament with the wins.

Game One
Finding themselves down 4-2 going into the bottom of the third, the Jackets responded with a three-run third to take the lead 5-2. Brett,Quackenbush singled to left field scoring Jake Sadler and Brandon Garrett to tie the game at 4-4. Then Connor Roberts doubled down the left field line to bring home Quackenbush and give HPU the 5-4 lead.

Howard Payne added a single run in the fourth on a,Sadler sac fly to plate Cody Cain. Then three more runs in the 5th to increase the Jacket lead to 9-4.,Cain singled up the middle to score Matthew Daniel, a Garrett hit by pitch with the bases loaded scored Connor Roberts, and Sadler walk with the bases loaded plated Cain to make the score 9-4 Jackets.

After a John,Elmore sac fly in the 6th scored Quackenbush, Sul Ross cut the lead to 10-7 on a three-run homer in the 7th. Shae Edmonds came in relief and shut the door on Sul Ross to pick up his second save of the season in the 10-7 win.

Jacob Spivey went three innings in the start allowing four runs on nine hits. Shawn Brody picked up the win, improving to 3-2 on the year. Brody went 3.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits. Garret was 2-for-2 form the plate with an RBI. Quackenbush was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Game Two
Howard Payne would come from behind again in game two. Down 3-1 going into the 6th.,Quackenbush doubled down the left field line to score and bring the Jackets to within one. In the 7th,,Elmore reached on a throwing error by pitcher and advanced all the way to third allowing Dustin DeJohn and Connor Roberts to score. Next Brandon Garrett singled to right field to bring home Elmore. Finally, Micah Thompson scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3 HPU.

HPU added to more runs in the 8th on a Brandon Garrett walk with the bases loaded to score Bailey Smith and a Jake Sadler tripled to left field scored three to make the 10-3 final outcome.

Shae Edmonds after picking up the save in game one, secures to win in relief for Howard Payne throwing 3.1 innings allowing no runs on four hits. Dustin Kelver went 4.1 innings in the start striking out four and allowing three runs. Zach Moseley threw the final frame and struckout one. Quackenbush finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate.

Howard Payne improves to 15-23 overall and 10-19 in American Southwest Conference play. Sul Ross State season ends at 19-21 overall and 15-14 in league action. The ASC will release the conference tournament bracket and information later Saturday evening.
