AUSTIN, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team tallied 14 hits on their way to a 7-5 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday afternoon in an elimination game on day two of the ASC tournament.
Starter
Jacob Spivey went 8.1 innings allowing five runs on 10 hits and striking out six.
Dustin Kelver picked up his first save of the year in relief striking out the final batter of the game.
Cody Brown went 3-for-4 from the plate with one RBI for Howard Payne.
Joshua Martinez,
Walker Dailey,
Connor Roberts and
John Elmore each recorded two hits for the Jackets.
After UMHB recorded a RBI doubled to left field in the top of the third, the Jackets responded with a RBI walk with the bases load by Cody,Brown to even the score at 1-1. HPU then gained the lead with a Walker,Dailey double down the left field line to score
John Elmore in the fourth.
The Jackets extended their lead in the fifth with an RBI single from
Connor Roberts and a RBI single and error to score two from
Dustin DeJohn to make the score 5-1 Jackets.,
UMHB added a single run in the sixth but Howard Payne answered back in the bottom of the inning with RBI singles from
Brandon Garrett and
Will Roberts. 7-2 Howard Payne.
UMHB made the game interesting with a RBI sac fly in the eighth and a two-run homerun in the ninth to make the game 7-5 Howard Payne. That would be when
Dustin Kelver came in to secure the HPU victory and his first save of the season.
Howard Payne will play the loser of the Concordia Texas and East Texas Baptist game in an elimination game at 10:00 am on Friday.
