BROWNWOOD, Texas – Six Howard Payne turnovers led to a 44-34 non-conference loss for the Yellow Jackets to Wayland Baptist University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.
Howard Payne would gain 576 yards of total offense in the game to just 384 yards for Wayland Baptist. But it was three interceptions and three fumbles lost by the Yellow Jackets that led to 31 points for Wayland.
Down 44-13 midway through the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets made a big push scoring three unanswered touchdowns to pull within ten, 44-34 with 9:17 to play in the game.

Patrick Hernandez one yard run capped a seven play, 86 yard drive (
Joshua Martinez kick good) that made the score 44-20 Wayland. Then with 12:51 left in the fourth,
Justin Acosta caught a 22-yard pass from
Richard Young, the Martinez kick made it 44-27 Wayland.
Caisson Montieth then hauled in a 19-yard pass from Young, Martinez kick good making it 44-34 Wayland with 9:17 left to play.,
On Wayland's next possession, HPU linebacker
Jason Disney for forced a Wayland fumble with
Austin Williamson recovering for the Jackets.,
Jason Disney finished with a game high 15 tackles, seven solo, 1.5 for loss.
HPU would drive down to 1st and goal going for the TD on fourth and one. The
Justin Acosta run was stopped and Wayland took over on downs with 4:33 to play in the game.
The Jacket defense would force a punt and HPU got another shot to score with 1:26 left to play. HPU drove to the Wayland 12 yard line, a Martinez field goal attempt went wide right ending the Jackets comeback run.

Richard Young was 28-for-54 passing for 376 yards, two TDs, and three INTs.
Colby Mica had eight catches for 117 yards.
Patrick Hernandez had 60 yards on 16 carries and one TD.
Jordan Longoria had 11 tackles and two sacks for HPU with
Kris Mack adding five tackles and five pass breakups in the Jacket secondary.
Wayland QB Bain was 16-for-39 throwing with three TDs. Monreal led Wayland with 14 tackles.
Howard Payne now stands at 0-2 overall and Wayland improves to 2-0 on the year. The Jackets will travel to Waxahachie, Texas next week to play Southwestern Assemblies of God University at 6:00 pm.
