WAXAHACHIE, Texas - The Howard Payne football team turned the ball over four times in the second half and lost 38-24 to Southwestern Assemblies of God University Saturday evening in non-conference action.
After the Yellow Jackets went up 24-17 on a
Colby Mica three yard TD run with 11:15 to play in the game, Howard Payne allowed 21 straight points to fall 38-24. Howard Payne would throw three interceptions and lose one fumble in the second half.
Finding themselves down 10-0 just four minutes into the game, the Jackets stepped up the defense pressure scoring two defensive touchdowns to take the lead 14-10.
Jordan Longoria recovered a SAGU fumble and returned it 19 yards for a TD to get HPU on the board. On the ensuing HPU defensive stand,
Xavier McFalls recovered a blocked punt and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.
HPU quarterback
Richard Young was 18-for-35 passing for 127 yards, with one TD and four interceptions.
Colby Mica had five receptions for 63 yards and a TD.
Patrick Hernandez had 16 carries for 70 yards.
Jason Disney led the HPU defense with 13 tackles, four solo.
Jordan Shaw followed with 11 tackles.
Donald Preston had one and a half sacks.
Gage Smith and
Kris Mack each had three pass breakups.
SAGU was led by CJ Collins with 17-for-29 passing for 245 yards and three TDs. Chris Jenkins had 11 carries for 62 yards. Jeremiah Maat led with 11 tackles.
Howard Payne is now 0-3 on the year and SAGU stands at 3-0. The Jackets will be at home next Saturday in a non-conference match up with Austin College at 1:00 pm.
