AUSTIN, Texas – The Howard Payne University women's basketball team extended its win streak to five games with a 60-51 victory over Concordia University Texas Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Lady Jackets remain in first place in the American Southwest Conference West Division standings.
After poor shooting by both teams in the first quarter, the Lady Jackets outscored the Tornados 24-12 in the second to lead 30-19 at the half. Concordia battled back to within five at the end of the third, 44-39 Howard Payne.
With just under three minutes to play in the fourth,
Danyel Bradley took a charge and on the Lady Jackets next possession
Micah Cisneroz offensive rebound and put back gave HPU 53-47 advantage with 2:00 minutes remaining.
The Lady Jackets hit 5-of-6 from the line down the stretch to claim the 60-51 conference victory. HPU outrebounded CTX 53-51 and held the Tornados to 0-for-10 shooting from behind the arc.
Danyel Bradley led all scorers with 14 points and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Micah Cisneroz finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Sarahi Castillo had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Ashley Caldwell had another huge game defensively with 11 rebounds and seven blocks.
CTX was led by Jaela Dejean with 11 points followed by Isis Johnson with 10 points and a game high 15 rebounds.
Howard Payne is now 10-8 overall and 5-3 in American Southwest Conference play. Concordia stands at 8-9 overall and 1-7 in league action. The Lady Jackets will be at home on Monday at 5:30 pm versus Louisiana College.
