BEAUMONT, Texas – Howard Payne University's
Sabrina Ochoa scored a game high 18 points in a 93-56 loss to D-I Lamar University Thursday evening at the Montagne Center.
Lamar University outrebounded Howard Payne by 24 (58-34) and forced 30 Lady Jacket turnovers in the non-conference matchup.
To start the game, Lamar jumped out to a 14-0 lead before HPU's
Sarahi Castillo hit an elbow jumper to break the Lady Jacket drought.
Lamar's pressure continued to dampen to the Howard Payne shooting holding the Lady Jackets to just 30% shooting in the first quarter. Leading 30-7 at the end of the first, Lamar connected on 63% of its shots in the quarter.
The Lady Jackets shot better in the second quarter. Back to back three pointers by HPU's
Sabrina Ochoa to end the half made the score 47-23 at the break.
The Lady Jacket scoring increased in the second half putting up 16 points in third and outscoring Lamar 19-16 in the fourth.
Sabrina Ochoa hit five of the Lady Jackets seven three pointers to finish with a game and personal season high 18 points.
Sarahi Castillo followed with 12 points. Valerie Matlock led HPU with seven rebounds and three steals.
Kristin Cunningham had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Lamar was led by Kiandra Bowers with 17 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Khali Pippins-Tryon had 12 points and Chastadie Barrs added 11 rebounds and nine steals.
Howard Payne is now 7-6 overall and Lamar 7-3 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play next on Jan. 3rd at Louisiana College in Pineville, LA at 5:30 pm.
