BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball team used 11 pitchers to defeat McMurry University 11-7 Wednesday in non-conference action.
The Howard Payne coaching staff had decided before the game that they would use the midweek outing as an opportunity to give some of the Yellow Jacket bullpen experience. HPU would use 11 different pitchers with none throwing more than one inning to claim an 11-7 victory over McMurry.
In one inning of work,
Matthew Parks struckout two in the start.
Zach Moseley got his first career win striking out two in the fifth. Wesley
Smith had one strikeout throwing the second.
Chad Anders allowed two runs on three hits in the third.
Nathan Weyrauch allowed two runs on two hits in the fourth.
Michael Cannon went .2 innings allowing two runs and walking two.
Dalton Land went .2 innings allowing one run on three hits and striking out one. Broadman Adams faced on batter.
Jonathan George went .2 innings striking out one and walking three.
Dylan Hudson throwing .2 innings and
Adrian Acosta finished the game throwing the top of the ninth, striking out one.
Brandon Garrett was big at the plate for the Jackets going 4-for-4 with one RBI.
Blake Laney,
Cody Cain and
Jacob Salazar each were 2-for-4 on the day.
Matthew Daniel and
Benjamin Lewis also recorded hits.
The Yellow Jackets jumper out to a 6-0 advantage after scoring two in the first and four in the second.
McMurry scored two runs in the third and fourth frames to make the score 6-4 HPU. The Jackets responded with a single run in the bottom of the fourth when Garrett scored on a wild pitch.
After two more runs from McMurry in the sixth, the Jackets added another single run on a
Benjamin Lewis triple to right center scoring Garrett. 8-6 Jackets.
McMurry pulled to within one in the seventh, but the Jackets would put the game away for good in the eighth scoring three runs making the score 11-7.
Howard Payne is now 3-1 overall and McMurry stands at 2-4 on the year. The Jackets will start conference play this weekend traveling to Louisiana College in Pineville, LA. for a single game on Friday starting at 12:00 noon and a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.
