CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas - The Howard Payne University baseball team defeated the University of the Ozarks 4-3 and 4-2 in a conference double header Thursday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets tallied nine hits in each game giving Howard Payne 18 total for the day.Â
Down 2-3 in the final frame of game one, a Matthew Daniel double to center field scored
Blake Laney and
Walker Dailey to give Howard Payne a 4-3 advantage and the eventual victory.
Brandon Garrett finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate.
David Groves was 2-for-3 and
Matthew Daniel finished 2-for-4 with the two RBIs.
Zach Moseley (2-1) got the win in relief allowing one run on three hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Matthew Parks got the no decision in the start allowing two runs on two hits and striking out two in five innings.
In game two, Seth Dohrman started the Jacket scoring in the first with a single to right field to plate Garrett. Howard Payne added two more runs in the second when a Garrett fielder's choice allowed
Cliff Lunceford to score and a Brent Quackenbush single to second base plated
Cody Cain.
After an Ozarks homer in the bottom of the second, the Jackets added an insurance run in the fifth on a Seth Dohrman single up the middle to scored Garrett. HPU allowed a single run in the sixth but held strong for the 4-2 victory.
Seth Dohrman finished 3-for-5 from the plate with two RBIs. Garrett and Quackenbush were both 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI.Â
Tyler Colburn (2-2) got the win in the start allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two in 6.2 innings of work.
Boardman Adams faced one batter forcing a ground out.
Adrian Acosta threw the remaining two innings picking up his third save of the season allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Howard Payne is now 8-7 overall and 4-4 in American Southwest Conference play. Ozarks stands at 9-12 overall and 3-8 in league play. The two teams will finish their conference series on Friday with a single game starting at 12:00 noon.
