BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team fell 9-4 and 6-2 in a non-conference double header versus Dallas Christian College Wednesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.
The Yellow Jackets stranded 18 runners and was outhit 21-14 in their non-conference double header with Dallas Christian College.
Dallas Christian opened up an 8-0 advantage after three innings before Howard Payne was able to get on the scoreboard in the fifth. A Matthew Daniel single through the left side scored
Noah Payne then a Joshua Martinez fielder's choice with the bases loaded allowed
Jacob Salazar to come home.
After a single run by Dallas Christian in the seventh, a two run
Matthew Daniel homer made the score 9-4 DCC.
Michael Cannon (1-1) picked up the loss in the start going one inning and allowing four runs on three hits.
Shawn Brody saw two innings in relief allowing four runs on five hits and striking out three.
Wesley Smith went three innings allowing just two hits with three strike outs.
Dalton Land threw the final frame allowing one run on two hits.
Matthew Daniel led the Jackets going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Noah Payne was 2-for-4 from the plate.
In game two, Dallas Christian again jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the top of the first and three runs in the third.
The Jackets answered in the bottom of the third to pull within three.
Cliff Lunceford and
Will Roberts walks with the bases loaded gave the Jackets two runs to make the game 5-2.
Dallas Christian added another run in the fifth to increase the lead to 6-2. The Jackets had opportunities in their final three at bats but stranded six runners to fall 6-2.
Chad Anders (1-1) got the loss in the start going 3.0 innings allowing five runs on six hits.
Jonathan George threw 2.0 innings in relief allowing one run on two hits and striking out two.
Nathan Weyrauch went one frame and allowed one hit.
Tyler Colburn and
Zach Moseley share the seventh, neither allowing a hit.
Joshua Martinez accounted for three of the five Jackets hits with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.
Howard Payne is now 18-17 overall and Dallas Christian stands at 17-33 on the year. The Jackets will have their final home series of the season this weekend versus Hardin-Simmons University starting at 2:00 pm on Friday. It will be senior weekend with the seniors being recognized between the double header games on Saturday.
