Jackets Lose In OT

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Howard Payne University's Caisson Montieth accounted for 425 yards of offense in a 40-37 overtime loss to Wayland Baptist University Saturday afternoon at Greg Sherwood Memorial Stadium.

Howard Payne quarterback Caisson Monieth had one of the greatest rushing performances for a QB in HPU history with 208 yards rushing. Including his 217 passing yards, Montieth accounted for 425 yards of the Jackets' 474 yards of total offense.

It was the best offensive outing for the Jackets on the season thus far. The Jackets defense was also solid in the second half of regulation, holding Wayland Baptist to just one field goal.

Wayland got on the scoreboard first scoring on an eight-yard run three minutes into the game.  Howard Payne answered on the next possession when Caisson Montieth found Leland Brown for a nine-yard TD reception with 9:37 left in the first quarter.

The Pioneers added a 37-yard field goal and a 62-yard TD reception in the first quarter to gain a 17-7 advantage at the end of the period.

Wayland extended its lead to 24-7 to start the second quarter on a six-yard TD run. The Jackets then put together a nine play 59-yard drive scoring on a one-yard Justin Acosta run with 5:34 left in the half.

Wayland added a 68-yard TD on its next possession making the score 31-14 at the half. Montieth led the Jackets offense in the first half with 131 yards rushing.

The Jackets started the second half strong scoring on their first three possessions.

First score came on an eight play 75-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard TD run by Shannon Warren taking 4:07 off the clock. Next, another Warren one-yard TD run that was at the end of a 10 play 70-yard drive by the Jackets. Lastly, Leland Brown hauled in his second TD catch of the day this time a four-yard pass from Montieth.

With the Jackets leading 34-31, Wayland would tie the game at 34-34 on a 27 yard field goal with 1:08 left in regulation.

In overtime, Jason Disney connected on a 20 yard field goal to give HPU a 37-34 advantage. Wayland was able to get into the endzone on their overtime possession with an 11-yard TD pass from Mitchell Parsley to Preston Woodard for the 40-37 game winner.

Along with his 208 yards rushing, Caisson Montieth was 14 of 26 passing for 217 yards and one interception. Shannon Warren had three catches for 79 yards and 17 carries for 49 yards and two touchdowns. Tightend Leland Brown had the two catches for two touchdowns.

Linebacker Jason Disney had eight tackles followed by Safety Patrick Hunt who added 7.5 tackles.

Wayland QB Parsley 18 of 33 passing for 343 yards and three touchdowns. Michael Nealy had 10 tackles.

Howard Payne is now 0-3 overall and Wayland Baptist stands at 2-1 on the year. The Yellow Jackets will have an open week next week before returning to play on Oct 1st in Pineville, LA versus conference opponent Louisiana College. It will be a 1:00 pm kickoff.
