Batten With 211 yds, Jackets Fall To Lobos

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne University freshman Hunter Batten rushes for 211 yards in a 52-15 conference loss to Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Posting 350 yards rushing as a team the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets could not match Sul Ross State's 306 in the air and 211 on the ground. Howard Payne would only have 63 yards passing on the day.

The highlight of the day for the Jackets was Hunter Batten's 211 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Batten's long run of 63 yards was all the way down to the Sul Ross one yard line to set up a Jacket score.

The Jackets first two scores of the day came on the leg of Blake Phipps who hit field goal kicks of 22 and 35 yards on HPU's last two possessions of the first quarter.

It was LeMarcus Harmon one yard run that capped the long Batten run with 12:47 left in the fourth quarter. Harmon finished with 67 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Phipps finished off the Jackets scoring with 4:27 left in the game connecting on his third field goal of the game, a 25 yard field goal capping a 12 play, 68 yard drive by the Jackets.

An interception and penalties were a factor in the game for the Jackets committing 14 for 135 yards. 

Eric Haverstock led the Jackets with with four receptions for 40 yards. Caisson Montieth had five punts for 226 yards, 45.2 avg., and a long punt of 72 yards.

Austin Killgore led HPU in tackles with eight, five solo followed by Jake Wright with seven and Tevin Dawson with six and a pass breakup.

Howard Payne is now 1-6 overall and 1-5 in American Southwest Conference. Sul Ross State stands at 4-3 overall and 3-3 in conference. The Jackets will play next Saturday at home again versus Texas Lutheran University at 1:00 pm.
