BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team come not maintain an early 14-0 lead and fell 63-21 to conference opponent Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The Howard Payne University football team jumped out to a 14-0 advantage before Texas Lutheran scored 28 straight to lead 28-14 at the half.

Edwin Godfrey got the Jackets on the board first scoring on a 64 yard reception from Mitchell Jennings, The touchdown capped a five play 84 yard drive for HPU. 

After a Texas Lutheran fumble, Godfrey scored on the Jackets first play from scrimmage this time a 44 yard reception from Jennings to make the 14-0 with 11:13 left in the first quarter. Edwin Godfrey finished the game with two catches for 108 yards and the two touchdowns.

With TLU leading 28-14 at the half, HPU's Hunter Batten took the opening handoff of the second half 64 yards for a touchdown. Hunter Batten finished the game rushing for 140 yards on 20 carries with one touchdown.

The Jacket defense would struggle from that point with Texas Lutheran scoring four straight touchdowns for the 63-21 final.

Caisson Montieth had 10 punts for 371 yards (37.1 avg) which included a long of 53 yards and two inside the 20-yard line. 

Colton Dickerson led all tacklers with 10 and a pass breakup. Jorden Smith had nine tackles, one for loss. Tevin Dawson and Austin Killgore followed with eight tackles each, Killgore had two for loss.

Howard Payne is now 1-7 overall and 1-6 in American Southwest Conference play. Texas Lutheran is 5-3 overall and 5-2 in league action. The Yellow Jackets will be on the road next Saturday at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Kickoff will be at 1:00 pm.
