KERRVILLE, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team fell 7-0 and 9-4 to Schreiner University Friday afternoon in non-conference play.
After being held to just two hits in game one of the double header, the Lady Jackets were able to get on track in game two offensively. Unfortunately, three errors in the field for Howard Payne would lead to a 9-4 loss in the second game.
Audrey Simpson (1-1) recorded the loss in game one giving up seven runs on 12 hits and striking out three in the complete game.
Rachel Hitt and
Kayla Boucher recorded a hit each for the Lady Jackets.
In game two, HPU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first on a Simpson RBI double and eventually stealing home.
Schreiner added three runs over the next two innings before HPU tied the game 3-3 in the fourth on a Boucher sac fly to score
Tonya Thompson.
After Schreiner added six total runs the next two innings, the Lady Jackets would score again this time on a
Tiffany Hinkleman RBI single to plate Boucher.
Madison Witherwax got the loss in the start going 3.2 innings allowing five runs on five hits and striking out four. Simpson when the rest of the way allowing four runs on five hits and striking out three. Five different Lady Jackets recorded a hit in game two.
Howard Payne is now 2-2 overall and Schreiner stands at 2-0 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play next at home versus Huston-Tillotson University on Tuesday, Feb 7th at 1:00 and 3:00 pm. Be sure to follow the Lady Jackets on Twitter @HPUsoftball.
