BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University softball team concluded its three-game series vs. Sul Ross State University with a 10-3 loss on Saturday afternoon at Lady Jacket Field.

Haley Slater homered to left field in the sixth inning and finished the game 1-2, and Kodi Glosson went 2-3 with a run scored in the loss. Tonya Thompson went the full seven innings for the Lady Jackets and faced a total of 38 batters on the day.

The Lobos (8-14, 3-11 ASC) scored five runs to start the game's first two innings and looked to be rolling towards an easy victory. But Howard Payne (5-15-1, 5-10 ASC) rallied back to end the second inning.

Trailing 5-0, Kayla Boucher started the bottom of the second inning by drawing a walk. Kodi Glosson would follow up with a double to right center to give the Lady Jackets runners in scoring position. After Tiffany Hinkleman went on to draw another walk, a Tonya Thompson sacrifice fly to right field would bring Boucher around to score. Sabrina Ochoa hit a nice ball to shallow left to bring in Glosson and cut into the Lobos lead, 5-2.

Howard Payne held the Lobos to one run in the top of the third and exchanged scoreless innings over the fourth and fifth to enter the sixth inning down, 6-2. Sul Ross was able to load the bases with some smart baserunning and timely bunts. They went on to score three more runs in the inning to extend their lead to 9-2.

The Lady Jackets received one more run in the bottom of the sixth as a result of Haley Slater's solo bomb to left field. But the Lobos pitching settled in and closed out the game and the offense would add one more insurance run in the top of the seventh and hold to capture the 10-3 victory. The win gives Sul Ross the 2-1 advantage in the series,

Next, Howard Payne softball is out on another road trip. This time to Tyler, Texas for the first of three games vs. the University of Texas at Tyler.
