Jackets Conclude Military Appreciation Day vs. ETBU

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University hosted their inaugural Military Appreciation Day vs. East Texas Baptist University at Don Shepard Park on Saturday afternoon. Despite the game's 7-4 and 8-4 outcomes, everything went off without a hitch during the second day of game action in the three-game series between the two conference foes.

Bailey Smith finished with two RBI's and a stolen base on 1-3 hitting and the Jackets had seven players combine for a total of seven hits during game one, but a four run third inning and then three consecutive one run innings would lead to the 7-4 victory for the Tigers in seven innings.

Kyle Ramon was on the mound to start game two for Howard Payne and after giving up two runs early in the first inning, he was able to settle down and pitched four innings of shutout baseball. By the time he exited the game, the Jackets were trailing by just two, 6-4. The Tigers were able to round the bases two more times in the eighth to take the series clinching 8-4 victory.

Cliff Lunceford finished game two with a triple, two singles, two runs scored and a walk on 2-4 hitting. Joshua Gerig added three RBI's, a double, and a run on 2-5 hitting and Kyle Ramon struck out six batter's while retiring 18 of the 31 batters he faced on the day. Jacob Salazar added one double and a walk on 1-4 hitting in the loss.

Howard Payne was the first to get the scoring started on the day and it came in the bottom of the second inning during game one. Benjamin Lewis led off the inning with a walk and Michael Nowak followed with a single down the left line to put him into scoring position. A beautiful sacrifice bunt from Noah Payne moved them both into scoring position when Bailey Smith brought them both around to score with a deep fly ball single to left field. After two innings, the Jackets would go up 2-0.

The fourth inning is when the game would change momentum, with the Tigers scoring four runs with back-to-back RBI doubles down the right field line. Howard Payne responded when in the bottom of the inning, Cliff Lunceford led off with a beautifully placed triple through the right center gap and a hard hit infield ball from Gerig to cut back into the deficit, 5-3.

ETBU would score two more runs in the fifth and sixth before the Jackets would attempt their rally from 7-3 down. Chris Byrd led off the bottom of the sixth with a nicely hit double down the right field line and he would round the bases on a hard hit infield out to the first basemen from Cliff Lunceford to make it 7-4.

However, the East Texas Baptist coaching staff would switch pitchers and rely heavily on their bullpen depth to hold the Jackets bats scoreless over the next two innings and pickup the 7-4 win in game one.

Game two started with both teams exchanging two run first innings and then going silent over the next two innings before making a mad dash for the end result and series clinching victory. Cliff Lunceford led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and Gerig doubled down the left field line on the ensuing possession to score Lunceford and start the scoring in game two for the Jackets. After Brett Quackenbush took a base on balls, Michael Nowak hit a sac fly to right field to score Gerig and tie the game up at 2-2.

The Tigers would tally two more runs in the top of the fourth to re-take the lead, 4-2 before Howard Payne would get one one back in the bottom of the bottom of the fifth. Lunceford led off the inning with a triple to right field and scored on a Joshua Gerig single up the middle to cut into the lead, 4-3.

East Texas scored one run in the top of the sixth to stretch their lead back out to 6-3 before Noah Payne led off the sixth inning with a single to right field. Ian Tyra took a walk to get the Howard Payne offense into scoring position in the bottom of the inning and ayne would come around to score an unearned run to end the inning and cut the deficit to 6-4.

A scoreless seventh inning from both teams ensued and the the Tigers used a two run eighth inning to pull away and take the victory in nine innings.
