ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team outscored McMurry University 21-6 in the second half but came up short in the end 33-21 in American Southwest Conference play Saturday evening.
A slow start for the Howard Payne defense in the first half led to a 27-0 McMurry halftime advantage. The Yellow Jackets totaled nearly 300 yards of offense in the second half out scoring McMurry 21-6. The Jackets defense kept the War Hawks out of the endzone in the second half holding them to just two field goals.
With 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter, HPU's
Kaidrion Latson scored on a one yard run (
Jaime Contreras kick ) capping an eight play, 90 yard drive. Then after McMurry's second field goal of the half, HPU's
Hunter Batten scored on a one yard run (
Jaime Contreras kick ) at the end of a 15 play, 72 yard drive, 33-14 McMurry.
Finally with 18 seconds left in the game,
Kaidrion Latson scored from one yard out (
Jaime Contreras kick ) on an 11 play, 80 yard drive, 33-21 McMurry final.

Caisson Montieth was 9 of 20 passing for 52 yards and one interception on the start.
Mitchell Jennings, playing the majoring of the second half, was 8 of 11 passing for 98 yards for the Jackets.
Hunter Batten led the Jackets on the ground with 97 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown. Tarig Gray led in receptions with eight for 78 yards.
HPU's
Colton Dickerson led all tacklers with 12, seven solo, one for loss and one pass breakup.
Tevin Dawson followed with seven tackles and one pass breakup.
Howard Payne is now 0-2 on the year and McMurry is now 1-2 overall. The Jackets will play at home next Saturday versus nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons University at 1:00 pm at Gordon Wood Stadium.
