GEORGETOWN, Texas –The Howard Payne University women's basketball team survived 36 team fouls to defeat Southwestern University 73-71 Saturday afternoon.
Both teams combined for 66 fouls in the game with seven players fouling out (HPU-4, SU-3). After shooting 42% from the line in the first half, the Lady Jackets stepped it up hitting clutch free throws in the fourth.
HPU's
Payge Grable went 6-for-7 from the line down the stretch and finished with a team high 12 points.
Down throughout the first half, the Lady Jackets took their first lead midway through the third quarter on an
Anastasia Willis layup, 42-41 HPU.
The Lady Jackets started the fourth with an 8-2 run and held the lead to the 73-71 final.
Grable was also 2-for-2 from behind the arc along with her six free throws to lead with 12 points.
Chelsey Harris,
Anastasia Willis and
Caprica Brooks each followed with 11 points. Brooks added six steals and three assists.
Salina Ali added 10 points and 3 assists.
Southwestern was led by Zhazze Brown with 26 points and Cecily Woolfolk with 23 points.
Howard Payne is now 1-2 overall and Southwestern falls to 0-2 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play next on Wednesday, Nov. 21st at D-I Houston Baptist University. It will be a 7:00 pm start time.
