ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team fell 70-69 after McMurry University sank a buzzer-beating layup on Thursday evening at Kimbrell Arena.
After shooting 46% in the first, Howard Payne struggled to find their shot in the third and fourth quarters, connecting on 30% of their shots. McMurry also outrebounded Howard Payne 50-34 in the game.
With Howard Payne leading by as much as 18 points in the second quarter, McMurry used 90% shooting from the field in the third quarter to get back into the game. The Lady Warhawks took their first lead of the game with just two minutes remaining.
Two free-throws by
Djimonii Jackson with 12 seconds remaining gave the Lady Jackets a 69-68 lead. Then McMurry's Sham Hunter hit a layup with two seconds left to give McMurry the lead and game.
Jada Evans finished with a game-high 22 points and was 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.
Presley McKethan added 10 points and four assists.
McMurry was led by Sham Hunter with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Skyler Reyna and Monica Jones each had 13 points. Reyna also grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
Howard Payne is now 13-9 overall and 9-5 in American Southwest Conference action. McMurry stands at 12-10 overall and 10-5 in league play. The Lady Jackets will play at Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
