MARSHALL, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team out hit East Texas Baptist University 14-8 but still needed extra innings to defeat the Tigers 3-2 in the eleventh frame.
Dylan Vilaros was stellar in the no-decision start for Howard Payne going nine full innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine.
Brenden Clanton threw the two extra inning frames allowing just two hits and striking out two for his first win of the season.
In the fourth, it was
John Killough's double to center field that scored
Jay Holland and
Noah Payne. In the top of the ninth, it was
Blake Laney's solo shot to left center that would be the eventual game winner for the Yellow Jackets.
Holland finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with a stolen base.
Cliff Lunceford,
Jacob Salazar and
John Killough each finished with two hits for HPU.
Howard Payne is now 14-6 overall and 3-4 in American Southwest Conference action. East Texas Baptist falls to 11-11 overall and 3-7 in league play. The two teams will play a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.
