BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull within a touchdown but fell 27-14 in the end to Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.
Freshman QB
McGwire Martin provided a spark offensively in the second half as the Jackets score two touchdowns to pull within seven, 21-14 midway through the 4th quarter.
Down 21-0 going into the 4th quarter, HPU's
McGwire Martin scored on a 23 yard run with 13:28 left in the game. It capped 13 play, 63 yard drive led by Martin.
The Jackets would score again on their next possession this time on a
Shannon Warren one yard TD run that was set up by a
McGwire Martin 40 yard run down to the one.
Howard Payne would be unable to stop the Bulldogs on their next drive and the game ended 27-14 after a missed extra point by TLU.
HPU's Martin ended the game 6 of 9 passing for 94 yards and rushing 10 times for 55 yards and the TD. Martin also had eight punts for 300 yards, three inside the 20, one touchback and a long of 72 yards.
Caleb Estes was 7 of 16 passing for 44 yards in the start.
Billy Reagins had nine carries for 35 yards and
Thomas Williams was the Jackets top receiver with four catches for 66 yards.Â
Britt Boler and
Austin Killgore led a solid HPU defensive unit each with 16 total tackles, each had one for loss and Killgore assisted with
James Jakubowski on a sack.
Zeno Barnum followed with 12 tackles.
Brady Wade would finish with two blocked kicks.
Howard Payne is now 2-4 overall and 1-4 in American Southwest Conference action. Texas Lutheran stands at 5-1 overall and 5-0 in league play. The Jackets will travel to East Texas Baptist in Marshall, Texas next Saturday for a 1:00 pm kickoff.
