Lady Jackets Defeat Tornados In OT

AUSTIN, Texas – Howard Payne University's Payge Grable and Anastasia Willis hit two free-throws each in the closing seconds of overtime to secure the 70-65 conference victory over Concordia University Texas Thursday evening.

Howard Payne hit 22 of 33 free-throws in the game while Concordia was 15 of 22 on the night. The Lady Jackets also out rebounded the Tornados 52-36 and forced 33 CTX turnovers.

Howard Payne struggled from the perimeter hitting just 1 of 11 three-point attempts.

With Concordia leading throughout the first half, the Lady Jackets used a 9-0 run to end the second quarter to lead 29-27 at the halftime break.

HPU continued to push and extended its lead to 12 in the opening minutes of the second half.

Concordia made a late game push and tied the game at 58-58 with 1:27 left in the game. Chelsey Harris hit two-free-throws with 11 seconds left to tie the game at 60-60. The Lady Jackets played excellent defense in the final seconds forcing overtime.

HPU was led by Chelsey Harris with 18 points and six rebounds. Caprica Brooks followed with 15 points, six rebounds and a game high five steals. Anastasia Willis finished with eight points and a team high 11 rebounds. Salina Ali had six assists and Payge Grable finished the game 7 of 8 from the free-throw line

Payton Gerger led CTX with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Kaycle Dunkerley added 12 points.

Howard Payne is now 8-7 in American Southwest Conference action and 11-13 overall. Concordia stands at 3-12 in league play and 7-17 overall. The Lady Jackets will finish out the regular season at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas on Saturday at 1:00 pm. The ASC will release the official championship tournament bracket on Sunday.
