BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne University's
Chelsey Harris scored a career high 33 points in a 76-61 conference victory for the Lady Jackets over Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon.
Howard Payne used a 21-7 first quarter to open up a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the game. In the opening period, the Lady Jackets shot over 50% from the field and held the Cowgirls to just 13% shooting. Howard Payne went on to lead 37-22 at the half.
The Lady Jackets out rebounded the Cowgirls 51-31 on the night with
Anastasia Willis led the HPU rebounding with a career high 15 boards.
Howard Payne finished the game shooting 44.6% from the field while Hardin-Simmons connected on 32.8% of their shots.
Chelsey Harris scored her career high 33 points on 10 of 16 shooting, 10 of 13 from the free-throw line. Harris also had six rebounds and two assists.
Payge Grable and
Caprica Brooks each had 13 points. Brooks also had nine rebounds and five steals.
Anastasia Willis added seven points to her 15 rebounds.
Hardin-Simmons was led by Taylor Gaffney with 17 points and Maria Fernandez with 14 points.
Howard Payne is now 10-13 overall and 7-7 in American Southwest Conference action. Hardin-Simmons stands at 16-7 and 10-5 in league play. The Lady Jackets will be on the road next week at Concordia Texas on Thursday at 5:30 pm and at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
