Brownwood, Texas - The Howard Payne Softball Team started the season in the best way by sweeping Austin College in a Saturday double header 10-3 and 8-0 (5).
Game OneÂ
The Lady Jackets put up two runs in the 1st partly thanks to an RBI triple by Alexis Sullivan that plated Aurora Luera.
The Roos battled back to tie it after scoring two in the 2nd, but Howard Payne answered with one run in the 3rd and a three run 4th inning to get up 6-2. In the 4th, Luera singled home Emily Martinez and a wild pitch scored Reagan Noriega.
The Lady Jackets scored again in the 5th to go up 7-2 and the Roos stole home in the 6th to make it 8-3. Tonya Thompson would single to right in the 6th to score Melinda Mendoza and Kayla Hill would add an RBI single of her own that inning to plate Kiley Persons to make it a 10-3 final.
Four Lady Jackets would tally two hits and Tonya Thompson and Kayla Hill would both have two RBIs.
Tia Campos went a complete game only allowing three runs, one earned, while striking out five.
Game Two
The Lady Jackets exploded for four runs in the 1st starting with a two RBI single to right center by Hill. Hill would later score on an error and Kayla Anderson would score on a passed ball.
Howard Payne would score one in  the 3rd, but put the game away in the 5th with an Alexandra Martinez SAC fly followed by a Kiley Persons single that scored Tori Muro.
Hannah Morales got the start for the Lady Jackets going three innings and only allowing two hits. Zalayna Perez finished the game with two innings giving up one hit and striking out one.
The Lady Jackets are now 2-0 and will be back on the field again at Home Tuesday against Huston Tillotson. Those non-conference games will start at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. You can find links to live stats at HPUSports.com.Â
