Brownwood, Texas – The Howard Payne University volleyball team started the season by sweeping Jarvis Christian College in a double header 3-0 and 3-1 Friday night in the Brownwood Coliseum.
Game One
The Lady Jackets started the game on a high note by winning the first set 25-18. The second set was a back and forth battle between the Lady Jackets and the Bulldogs, but HPU took the second set 25-23. Howard Payne had a dominating third set, leading by as much as 13. The final score was 25-18.
Mya Ross led the Lady Jackets with 17 kills.
Amaya Marshall had a game high two blocks. Riley Brittain tallied 18 assists in front of
Kaitlyn Elsten's 14.
Daisy Flores recorded 14 digs.
Lauryn Johnson recorded seven kills for the Bulldogs. Jayda Trinidad had 13 assists and Jai'la Gray had five digs.
Game Two
The Lady Jackets got off to another strong start during the second game of the double header. The beginning of the first set was close, but the Lady Jackets went on a 5-0 scoring run and were able to pull away from the Bulldogs in the end 25-19. Trouble came in the third set when the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run to start. The Lady Jackets were unable to recover, dropping the set 25-13.
The Lady Jackets came out in the fourth set ready to win. The beginning was once again close, but a pair of 4-0 scoring runs put the Lady Jackets on top 25-17. Howard Payne defeated Jarvis Christian 3-1 in game two of the double header.
Mya Ross led the Lady Jackets with 18 kills.
Amaya Marshall recorded two blocks. Riley Brittain had 16 assists followed by
Kaitlyn Elsten's 15.
Elizabeth Benn had 12 digs while Riley Brittain had 11.
Lauryn Johnson had 12 kills for the Bulldogs. Alexis Bell had a game high four blocks. Jayda Trinidad recorded 16 assists. Jai'la Gray added 10 digs.
Lady Jackets start the 2020-21 season 2-0 while Jarvis Christian falls to 0-7 on the year. The Lady Jackets will take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, Feb. 9
th in the Brownwood Coliseum, a double header starting at 5:00 pm.
